Concept behind Reeds4U Franck Avril, oboist

Unlike those wonderful reed-makers who will make reeds for you on their material, I offer the service of making a reed for you with your own materials (that you would send me), your cane at any stage, from tube cane to planed cane, to shaped pieces, to a tied blank and even all the way up to profiled reed, so that you can evaluate the effects of any step that I take, and the effects of different materials / gouges / shapes and the like.

If you send us your own staple to use when pertinent, I will also apply a $2.75 credit from the price of the Final Reed, compared to my using my own staples (see Price List). Since most of us re-use our staples anyway, I believe that this offers us both an opportunity to maintain that practice and to reduce cost, as long as the staple is viable.

I can also make you a reed entirely from scratch, just as I do for my own work, but if I do, please specify for me which gouge and which shape you would prefer. [Please note that I make my own reeds on a standard-bore Lorée Royale oboe and use a selection of tube cane from a variety of online reliable sources]:

  • I own a Graf gouger, and a Ross gouger with a no. 2 blade.

 My Graf Gouger

The Graf, which uses a double-radius blade, has the blade ground to certain specifications I had requested, such that the cane measures .60mm in the center, with the sides no thinner than .44mm or .45mm at the extreme edge (when dry)…but it is the shape of the blade and how the cane gets from .60 to .45 that is distinct in each gouger and which shapes its characteristics in the final reed.

 My Ross Gouger

My Ross gouger was purchased later, directly from Dan Ross (at his studio) when he and Richard Killmer were evolving additional new and different blade profiles to his first one.  As such, he made for me what he called a no. 2 blade: I had requested thicker sides due to my requiring more structure so that my reeds changed less drastically while I was touring. As such, that gouge was also set up .60mm in the middle, but with sides around .48mm. As with all Ross machines, it remains a single-radius gouger.

The shaper tips which I own and use are as follows (in no particular order):

Pfeiffer-Mack, Mack++ , Sara, Jeanné  (the orig. Jeanné shape) and Robinson-Barr.

 My Shaper Tips

A reminder that each shape has a different set of characteristics and feel, and that the resultant shaped cane itself will differ slightly to reflect what gouge one uses with it. How a shape may work for you is a matter of personal style, incorporating a reflection of what you see, what you need, and of course your overall stylistic and aesthetic approaches as a player.

 My Shaper Tips

Please also note that I trim my reeds with a Kunibert Michel tip-cutter (newest version), which leaves one blade slightly longer than the other. I play with the longer blade away from me (and mark my reeds such that I can spot the proper shorter side quickly).
